Shoe Tying is one of life’s “little hurdles” on the way to independence! Many parents may not take the time to teach a skill that could be a true bonding experience, but instead opt for the Crocs or some sort of slip on! Occupational Therapists are in a unique position to teach this skill and to work with parents in the home setting to successfully master this task. The “Shoe Tying Made Simple” program was designed for all children and all types of learners, from whole class instruction for typically developing children to those that may need information presented to them in their specific learning style. It doesn’t matter because we have FUN in mind for all Learners! All of us have our own learning style and many of us enjoy music, rhymes, chants, and strong visual supports in order for us to remember what we are learning. Then there are those that really like “pops of color” and it contributes greatly to our learning process. Then there are those of us who may need to touch or “feel the steps” in order for us to ingrain and exhibit motor memory. Then there are learners who really like a combination of all along the journey to the learning process. We at Junction of Function, know this and understand this and guess what? WE HAVE GOT YOU COVERED
When I was in the beginning of my career, I strived to figure out just “what was the secret sauce” so to speak to make it easier for children to comprehend and understand what exactly I was teaching them. Early on I figured out that understanding learning styles was going to be imperative to my success and the ultimate success of my learners. I traveled to learn from the best and the brightest as I knew this would help me to be the best professional OT that I could be! I’ll let you in on a few of the big take-aways here:
What really matters is:
There are children that will quickly pick up a new skillset when there is a concise, orderly format to the presentation of new material that is so eloquently infused with a multisensory approach. Then, there may be other learners whom may need to spend more time in the task analysis. Rest assured that all children can learn and the key is in understanding how they learn!
Here’s the “why” its number one! It caters to all learning styles and it’s fun!
Here’s the glimpse of what you will learn in this course:
